Thoughts and anxiety
The way we think plays an important role in the development of our anxiety.
There are several ways to think about a stressful situation. When we think about the corona pandemic, if we think about the worst-case scenario, we will feel fear and anxiety. Alternately, if we think in less black-or-white terms, then we might still be worried - but less so.
Learning to think realistically is possible, but requires effort, because we are accustomed to making generalizations and thinking in ways that are often inaccurate and unrealistic.
Often our thinking is negatively biased: we are used to "seeing the glass half empty", especially when we think our future is in danger.
Negative thoughts often occur because our thinking is not balanced. Their general name is "thinking biases" because our thinking is biased - towards the negative.
