What is anxiety, when does it happen and why?

Anxiety is the body's natural reaction to stressful situations.

Sometimes the brain's anxiety mechanism works too hard, causing it to go into overdrive.  This may produce feelings of discomfort, characterized by an inner restlessness. Anxiety can be related to thinking unpleasant thoughts and sometimes results in a tendency to worry a lot. Feelings of anxiety are sometimes accompanied by different physical symptoms, including unpleasant physical sensations such as sweating, a rapid pulse, sleep disturbances and even muscle pains.

Feelings of anxiety, and the fear of having these feelings, may also result in behavioral changes.  In many cases it may make us avoid routine daily activities, thereby causing us suffering and damaging our quality of life.

Anxiety disorders are very common!  Between 5 -10 percent of the population will suffer from anxiety and seek mental health treatment during their lifetimes.

There are a number of tools at our disposal to control our anxiety levels: relaxation methods, making behavioral changes and changing our way of thinking.
